About Power
More power does not always lead to a better telescope. About the Refractor or Reflector
There are a couple of lenses in a refractor. The bigger lens, referred to as the objective, is located at one end. About the Eyepiece
Most of the products available for kids must include one eyepiece at least. The eyepiece is generally rated by millimeters. The smaller the number, the higher the magnification. Most kids will do well with one eyepiece measuring 25 millimeters. Very high magnification might give more details compared to the average telescope but children will not be able to appreciate it as much because they also need to focus very carefully and collect the right amount of light to get the clearest images. Children at a very young age are still not able to focus well and will need the help of an adult or the support of a mount just to get a decent view.
About the Mount
The mount is considered by many as the most important accessory when choosing telescopes for kids. There are two main kinds of mounts – the equatorial mount and the altazimuth mount. The equatorial type will follow how objects move in the sky. There are even motor and computer-powered equatorial mounts that will automatically focus and aim for different items found. These are already sophisticated versions and are more ideal for teenagers and adults. The altazimuth mount will work just like a camera tripod by moving the telescope back and forth or azimuth or up and down or altitude. This is more preferred for kids.
